TypeShelf

Turn local fonts into a library you can browse. Compare typefaces, organize tags and collections, and temporarily activate the fonts you need for a design session.

Who is it for?

For Windows designers and anyone reviewing fonts for a project. TypeShelf is free on Microsoft Store and does not require a developer account or an app subscription.

What you can do

01

Organize your library

Browse local fonts, save collections and tags, and use library views to find faces that have not been grouped.

02

Compare up to four faces

Use shared specimen text to review typefaces side by side. Save your shortlist as a collection.

03

Set app activation rules

Temporarily activate fonts and define rules for design apps. Clean Shelf reviews identical copies, name conflicts, and missing files without deleting them.

Getting started

  1. Get TypeShelf from Microsoft Store on your Windows PC.
  2. Browse your font folders or import files, then create collections and tags.
  3. Compare your shortlist and activate the fonts needed for your design session.

Before you use it

Windows x64 is required; Windows 11 is recommended. Desktop TTF, OTF, and TTC files support specimens and session activation. Readable web fonts can be indexed for browser specimens but cannot be activated in desktop apps. App font caches may require reopening a document or restarting the app. Use fonts according to their licenses.

Common questions

Does TypeShelf upload my font files?

Font files, collections, tags, and rules are managed locally. An app account is not required.

Does temporary activation permanently install a font?

Session activation is separate from permanent installation. Manage fonts installed through Windows in Windows Fonts settings.
